I’ve been a little slack in the “news” department lately on this site, but it’s not for lack of news! First off, we had a spectacular time in New Orleans in February for my birthday, replete with music, cocktails, and all the food you can imagine. NOLA really exists in its own space, makes its own rules—it felt like another country to me. Those lax open-container laws aside, there’s a bold-faced individuality about that city, the powerful pull of a shared culture and a certain joie de vivre that permeates it despite its hard times. Speaking of, we were fortunate to have an old friend there who showed us around the worst of the Katrina-scarred areas, which clearly still have a long way to go on the road to recovery. I photographed every aspect of the city I could in our limited time, but especially its wonderful, distinctive gastronomy; see the photos online here.
But the big news is this: Since our return from Colombia in November, Scott and I have been plotting a new business venture, a website called EatYourWorld.com (a temporary splash page for now) that will highlight regional/native/traditional foods from different cities and countries around the world. Ambitious, yes, but we’re putting tons of thought into this, and we’ll be calling upon some globally situated, foodie journalist/photog friends to help us out, as well as having users pitch in (the site will be partially interactive). It’s already been an exhausting process—and there’s so much yet to do—but we’re super excited about the project. It’s kind of amazing to work on something you believe in that’s truly your own.
To that end, we’ve been taking lots of domestic trips—to Miami, New Orleans, Philly, New Haven—so far this year, to expand our scope more locally even as we work on coverage gleaned from past trips (luckily, I take notes about everything, and we’ve both always liked to photograph food while traveling). We’re also working on NYC coverage whenever we can. As a result of all that work—on top of our usual money gigs—I’ve been doing very little pitching of travel/food stories; there’s only so much time in a day! I can at least update my site with the latest piece I wrote for Draft, about the great beer bar Alibi in Vancouver.
Finally, we’ve created a little teaser for our EYW website, focusing on those delectable foods of NOLA—just in time for Jazz Fest this week—which you can view here. Next up for us is food and drink coverage of two of our favorite cities south of the border: Mexico City and Oaxaca. Full steam ahead!
